Alternative Schools

Specialized Opportunities

Coeur d'Alene Police Explorers Program

The Explorer Program is a division of the Boy Scouts of America and is sponsored by Coeur d’Alene Police Department. The program is designed for young people who may be interested in a career in law enforcement.  Some of the services that Explorers provide are assisting at community functions and traffic direction. Applications are accepted in July & August.

Coeur d'Alene Fire Department Cadet Program

The CDAFD Cadet Program is aimed at preparing the next generation of Firefighters. The Fire Cadet program is aimed at high school seniors who may be interested in a career in public safety. Applications are accepted each prior to each semester.

Parenting Classes

  • iCARE Parenting Classes
    St. Vincent de Paul's iCARE program partners with parents to build stronger families, with classes such as Nurturing Parenting, Nurturing Fathers, and Love & Logic. Visit iCARE's website for locations, times, & registration information.
  • READY! for Kindergarten is a program of classes for parents who have children ages 4 and 5. This program shares information about the lively early-learning years before a child enters school, which lays the foundation for all future learning. Classes are free to families in North Idaho, and free child care is provided.

Special Education

The Idaho State Department of Education defines "Special Education" as "Specially designed instruction or speech/language therapy at no cost to the parent to meet the unique needs of a student with a disability including instruction in the classroom, the home, hospitals, institutions, and other settings; instruction in physical education; speech therapy and language therapy; transition services; travel training; assistive technology services; and vocational education."

  • Idaho Educational Services for the Deaf & Blind
  • Total Communication preschool at Borah Elementary
    Provided through the Coeur d'Alene School District and IESDB, the program is four days a week and is free and open to deaf or hard-of-hearing children in any North Idaho county. Students can enroll anytime.
  • Idaho Training Clearinghouse
    The Idaho Training Clearinghouse (ITC), funded by the Idaho State Department of Education-Special Education, is designed to link school professionals and parents with special education training opportunities and resources across the state.
  • Education & Health Innovations
    Education & Health Innovations provides special education services in Couer d’Alene Idaho for children, youth and adults with reading, writing and math learning disabilities.

  • North Idaho College
    A comprehensive community college located in Coeur d'Alene offering more than 150 degrees and certificates in a wide spectrum of community education, academic transfer, and professional-technical programs.
  • University of Idaho
    The University of Idaho Coeur d'Alene offers certificate, undergraduate, and graduate degree programs.
  • Lewis Clark State College
    Lewis-Clark State College — Coeur d'Alene offers a variety of bachelor's degrees. Known for affordability, friendly service, and quality instruction, LCSC Coeur d'Alene provides a wide range of both online and on-site course options.
  • Boise State University
    Boise State University offers the only Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Accredited Master in Social Work in North Idaho and provides accessible classes by offering coursework during evening, weekend and partially online sessions.
  • Idaho State University
    Idaho State University offers a master's of science degree in nursing in Coeur d'Alene with an emphasis on health policy and rural issues. ISU's College of Pharmacy offers clinical rotations in Coeur d'Alene for students in its doctorate of pharmacy program.

After School Programs

Resources listed by County below are generally programs that are no cost, located on school grounds, and/or provide transportation for after-school programs.

Kootenai County

  • CDA4Kids - Club240 After School Programs - Coeur d'Alene
    For Elementary & Middle School-aged Kids. CDA4Kids (Community Development Affiliates for Kids) is a before & after school program that provides positive adult role models. There is typically designated homework time (Homework House) plus enrichment activities such as arts & crafts, life skills, hobbies, etc. Current locations: Atlas, Borah, and Fernan Elementary, Canfield, Lakes, and Woodland Middle Schools, Venture High School. There is also a Summer CDA4Kids program.
  • Kroc Center After School Program - Coeur d'Alene
    The Kroc Center's free after school program is for members and nonmembers, and includes a healthy snack and organized activities for youth in grades 6–8. Free transportation is provided Monday through Friday from Lakes, Canfield, and Woodland Middle Schools to The Kroc Center. Students work on homework, projects or study skills while supervised by Kroc staff from 3–4pm.
  • KITE - Harrison, ID
    KITE provides to students (ages K-8) the opportunity to receive tutoring and engage in enrichment activities. Program goals include attending to the academic, emotional and social well-being of children.

  • Plummer/Worley Success Center
    The Success Center is a before and after-school program serving students 2nd-5th grade who attend the Plummer-Worley School District, as well as home-school students residing within the district boundaries. The Success Center also holds a two week Summer Program.
